Pure lambskin leather is a natural material that benefits from regular conditioning to help prevent dryness. It gives your bag a refreshed look and can help the leather feel soft, shiny and supple again.
A very simple care routine can go a long way, and even a small amount of effort can make a noticeable difference to how your bag looks and feels.
Picking the Right Leather Conditioner

It is of vital importance that you pick the right leather conditioner. Choose a conditioner that is made specifically for leather accessories such as bags or wallets. Avoid using products intended for other uses, such as sofas or upholstery, as they may be too strong and could affect the bag’s colour or surface. If you do want to proceed with your leather conditioner of choice, test it on a small hidden spot first.
For the most suitable results, we recommend our own leather essence, which is formulated to be suitable for Jon Louis leather products.
The Conditioning Process
What you need:
- A Microfibre cloth
- Leather Conditioner
- Sponge
Step 1: Dust the bag with a Microfibre cloth

Dust the bag thoroughly with a Microfibre cloth, removing all surface dust first. Ensure it is clean and fully dry before proceeding to the next step.
Step 2: Pump some leather conditioner onto the sponge

Apply 1 to 3 pumps of leather conditioner onto the sponge, depending on the size of your leather item.
For the first time conditioning a new leather item, you may use a slightly more liberal amount of conditioner on the sponge, around 3 to 5 pumps depending on the size of the item. For subsequent conditioning sessions, 1 to 3 pumps are usually enough.
The Jon Louis sponge is designed with a special layer that helps reduce absorption of the leather essence, so less product is wasted.
Please do not over-condition, as excess conditioning can weaken the leather fibres and compromise its durability.
Step 3: Use the sponge to gently condition the bag

Use the sponge to gently work the conditioner over the bag in a back-and-forth motion, moving from one end to the other and going over every area at least once. Remember to condition the strap and the leather around the zip areas at the top, as these are often overlooked.
Step 4: Set the sponge aside for future use
The Jon Louis Conditioning Sponge does not require washing after use. When you are done, you can store it away for future use.
Step 5: The results

This is an unedited before-and-after comparison of a leather bag conditioned using the Jon Louis Leather Essence. As shown, conditioning has helped revive the leather’s appearance, leaving it soft, supple and noticeably refreshed.
